Dear Katie,
My hairline is receding! I know this "ballerina baldness" comes from putting my hair in a tight bun every day. But we're required to wear tight buns for class. What can I do?
Liza
Dear Liza,
Get creative with hairstyles that meet your school's requirements but are kinder to your hair. Here's one to try: Section off the front part of your hair, near your hairline. Put the rest of your hair in a tight ponytail and create a bun. Then, pin the front sections to the back, securely but without tugging at them. If your teacher allows it, you can also try a French twist, which keeps the back of your hair tight while leaving the front a little looser.
Here's a trick that saved me at New York City Ballet: Wet your hair down when you slick it back. It'll be nice and tight to begin with, but as it dries, it'll loosen slightly. And you can always use a lot of hairspray. Products don't create baldness; pulling your hair tight does. So spray away!
